It can sometimes feel like you are cold all of the time.  For some people they have cold intolerance.  Which is exactly what it sounds like.  It is feeling colder than they should.  For some people they can feel cold all of the time no matter if they are bundled in layers and under a blanket.  The normal body temperature range is from 97 degrees to 99 degrees Fahrenheit.  Anything below 96 degrees is considered too cold.  When you feel cold you may also feel pain, tingling, numbness, chills, stiffness, weakness, swelling, skin color changes, and discomfort.

Reasons for why you are cold all the time can vary and range for a number of reasons.  If you are female you have a higher chance of being cold all the time.  Due to slower metabolism, and less body fat.  Other reasons may be as easy as an illness like a cold or flu. In some cases though, being cold all the time may be a sign of an underlying condition.

Anemia can cause you to feel cold all the time.  Anemia is when your body can’t make enough normal red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body.  Along with feeling cold you may also have symptoms like fatigue, or a fast heart beat.  There are lots of different types of anemia so you will want to speak with a doctor on how to best treat your anemia.  One way is to boost the amount of iron.  This could be through supplemental form or raising the amounts of iron rich foods in your diet.  High iron foods are leafy green vegetables, red meat, and dried fruit.

Your thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland in your neck that produces thyroid hormones that helps your body with a lot of functions, one being your metabolism.  When your body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone, you can end up having hypothyroidism, which can slow your metabolism way down.  Other symptoms other than feeling cold that go along with hypothyroidism are thinning hair, dry skin, fatigue, irregular periods, constipation, and weight gain.

Blood vessel disorders can also make you feel cold all the time.  Blood vessel disorders can restrict the blood flow to the arms and legs.  Examples are clotting disorders, arteriosclerosis, or Raynaud’s disease.  Other symptoms are white or blue fingers and toes, clammy cold skin, and tingling or numbness of the arms and legs.

Diabetes can cause circulation issues which can lead to you feeling cold all the time.  You may also feel thirsty, urinate frequently, have recurrent thrush, blurry vision, and weight loss.

Having a low body mass index means that you have low body fat.  In some cases having too low of a body mass index means that you don’t have enough fat to help provide your body with insulation.  Low BMI makes you prone to irregular periods, trouble getting pregnant, weak brittle bones, malnutrition, and depression.  Other symptoms of a low BMI are tiredness, low blood pressure, low heart rate, low blood sugar, night sweats, cold fingers and toes, and muscle problems.

A vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause you to feel cold.  This deficiency is common in vegetarians since plants do not have vitamin B12.  Your body may also not be able to absorb properly in some cases.  Other symptoms include trouble walking, numbness, nausea, not feeling hungry, weight loss, tiredness, fast heart rate, or diarrhea.

The best way to treat being cold all the time is to find treatments for the reason causing you to be cold.  This could be speaking with a doctor about your underlying condition.  If you have a sickness such as the cold or flu, resting and staying hydrated until you are better.  Learn to warm yourself up in ways that are effective.  This may be learning how to bundle up appropriately.  Start with keeping your feet warm, with layering thermal socks.  Instead of wearing one thick fluffy shirt, wear light layers and build them up.  Start with a thermal base, try to stay away from cotton because it will hold on to moisture which could make you feel colder.  Eating can help raise your body temperature eating foods like carbohydrates, whole grains, red meats and proteins take longer to digest which can help you be warmer.  Drink warm beverages to warm yourself from the inside out.  This could be herbal teas, or warm soups.

If you are cold all of the time and it does not seem to be getting better no matter what kind of environment you are in you may want to reach out to a doctor to get another opinion.  Other symptoms you should watch out for are fatigue, weakness, and weight loss.  Experiencing any of these with feeling cold could be a sign of something more serious that needs to be addressed.
