When you hear the word hobby you may think of children or teens spending their time doing something they enjoy.  Hobbies can be for more than just children.  A hobby is any activity you do regularly for the purpose of enjoyment.  The interesting thing is some hobbies may benefit your wellbeing and your overall health.  They can help you physically, mentally, and cognitively.  Hobbies may even help transform your life. 

Of course when you think of a hobby that has health benefits you may think of physical hobbies.  Such as hiking, cycling, pickleball, golf, dancing, or swimming.  Which yes, an exercise hobby is a benefit for your health.  It helps you fit regular exercise into your normal schedule, and since you enjoy it, it doesn’t feel hard to do.  All these physical hobbies also help you boost your cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and enhance flexibility.  All of this can help reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease or diabetes.  Physical activities such as gardening can also be beneficial to your health.  Even though it may not be considered working out, gardening is not for the faint of heart.  The benefit of gardening as well as some other physical hobbies is it gets you outside.  Which adds another benefit to your health.  Exposure to the sun helps you get Vitamin D, which is essential for immune function and health.  Being physical releases endorphins, or the feel good chemicals which can help boost your mood.  Being outside also boosts your mood.  

There are creative hobbies, which may be some of the more thought of hobbies.  These would be hobbies like painting, drawing, listening to music, playing an instrument, writing, cooking, baking, or photography.  All of these use the creative side of your brain.  Hobbies like this can improve your attention.  They may also help increase your self-esteem.  Creative hobbies can relieve stress and lower blood pressure.  It can also help enhance overall emotional resilience.  Even if you don’t think you are creative, you can always try.  Knitting has become a very popular hobby over the past few years.  You don’t have to win awards to do a hobby, it has to be something that you enjoy doing whether you make masterpieces, or just pieces you are proud of. 

Reading is a hobby that a lot of people take up.  This is a mental boosting hobby.  Other mental boosting hobbies include learning a new language, or doing puzzles.  Puzzles aren’t limited to just the kind you put together.  It could be word puzzles, word searches, cross word puzzles, or even sudoku.  These hobbies can help enhance your cognitive function.  Which can lower your risk of cognitive decline and diseases like Alzheimer’s.  Mental hobbies can help build and maintain neural connections in the brain.  They help improve memory and improve your problem solving abilities.  

In some cases hobbies may be able to overlap in benefits.  Reading for some people may help boost their mental capabilities, while also relaxing them, and if you read outside you would benefit from getting some valuable vitamin D.  

If you don’t have a hobby or are unsure of how to find one.  Think about things that interest you and see if you can find a hobby that coincides with that.  The possibilities of hobbies are endless.  It can be anything that you do regularly for enjoyment.  Hobbies that get you moving, get you outside, help lower stress, calm you, and give you a mental boost tend to have more overall health benefits, then hobbies that keep you sedentary.  When choosing a hobby make sure you take cost and time into consideration.  Some hobbies may be much more expensive to get into than others.  You don’t want the cost of your hobby to cause stress on the budget.    

Hobbies are also a great way to meet people.  To cultivate social bonds between people who have the same interest in things.  Doing things together with other people can help foster a sense of belonging and community.  That can be very important for mental health. 

When starting a new hobby try to allocate small amounts of time at first.  Don’t set goals too high that you get overwhelmed or tired of your hobby before you get the chance of being able to enjoy it.  Hobbies do not have to be perfect, they have to be enjoyed.  Having too many hobbies may not harm you.  Feel free to have multiple hobbies at a time that you pop back and forth from.  This can help you have diverse experiences as well as personal growth.  A hobby becomes a problem when it starts to feel like a chore.  The enjoyment has gone away.  A hobby can also be a problem if it starts to take control of your life and you become obsessive over it.  This also may be signs to step away and reevaluate.
