Hydration is important during the day.  It helps support bodily functions.  Water quenches thirst, helps manage body weight, prevents headaches, and improves your mood.  Not only that if you lose more than 10% of your body’s water, it could be fatal.  You lose water throughout the day from breathing, sweating, and using the bathroom.

Waking up in the morning some people tend to be mildly dehydrated. Drinking a big glass of water before bed may help you sleep better.

Health Benefits of Water Before Bed

Staying hydrated supports the systems in the body that impact sleep.  Drinking a glass or bottle of water before bed can help you wake up not mildly dehydrated.  Dehydration can be fatal.  Symptoms of dehydration are thirst, dry mouth, small urine output, or dark colored urine.  Drinking water can help quench thirst, help manage body weight, prevent headaches, and improve mood.

A benefit of drinking water before you go to sleep is improving your mood.  Water deprivation can negatively affect your mood.  This can cause trouble in your sleep-wake cycle.  There have been studies done that have shown an increase in water before bed helps a person to feel more energetic and calm the next morning.  Another study showed that an increase in water before bed increased the feeling of calmness before falling asleep.  Increased water intake has been shown to improve mood, calmness, overall satisfaction and other positive emotions.

Drinking warm water before bed has some specific benefits.  It can help detox your body as well as help improve digestion.  Warm water can also boost your metabolism which can help you burn extra calories while you are sleeping.

If you are suffering from stomach pain or cramping, drinking a glass of warm water can help alleviate that.  Warm water also increases your blood circulation which helps you break down waste easier.

Warm water increases your sweat output.  More sweating does lead you to lose more water, but it can also help rid your body of some unwanted toxins.  If you can’t take just drinking warm water plain you can add some lemon to it.  Warm lemon water can help boost your immune system with the Vitamin C from the lemon.

Drinking water before bed can help prevent headaches as well as relieve headaches you may have lingering when you are trying to fall asleep.

Better temperature control is another benefit. Being well hydrated helps your body regulate your internal temperature.

If you are sad because your skin looks dull and saggy, drink up a big bottle of water and plump up your skin.

Increase in water intake can also lower your blood pressure and heart rate.  Hydration helps your heart pump more efficiently which can help lower your blood pressure and your heart rate.

Side-Effects Of Water Before Bed

The big negative of drinking water before bed is the extra trips to the bathroom.  In a normal sleep cycle your body can go without having to go to the bathroom between 6-8 hours at a time.  If you drink water before bed this can change this cycle.  If it does you could be woken up multiple times during your normal sleep cycle which can lead to sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and weight gain.  If you are worried that you adding in water before bed may cause extra trips to the bathroom it may not be beneficial to you.  Limiting water 2 hours before bed and using the bathroom as close to bedtime as possible may help if you suffer from waking up needing to go to the bathroom frequently.

Conclusion

Staying hydrated throughout the day is just as important as drinking water right before bedtime.  Daily hydration may help you improve your sleep without having to drink right before you fall asleep.  Your body naturally isn’t thirsty before bed so your body can prepare for a long period of time where you don’t use the bathroom.

Some people may find benefits from drinking a glass of water before bed such as improved mood, feeling of calmness, detoxing the body, helping with digestion, and relieving headaches.

If you notice drinking water before bed is disrupting your sleep cycle, maybe speak with your doctor if you are waking up multiple times a night to use that bathroom.  There are some underlying conditions that could be playing a role in your frequency of urinating during the night.
