A recent study in the UK found that office workers are too sedentary, which is causing lots of health problems. And by simply standing up for 30 minutes can save lots of lives!
Sedentary life has been linked to many health problems such as: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, mental health problems and even cancer!
By simply waking around the office or standing up for 30 minutes can save your life, study suggest. This study was done in the UK with over 2000 office wokers and below are the facts:
- 45% of women and 37% of men spend less than 30 minutes a day standing up.
- More than 50% of people have their lunch on their desk
- 78% of people feel that they are sitting down for long time
- 60% of office workers are worried that their sedentary life will impact their mental health
These are shocking facts and these facts are the result of an increase of mental and physical health problems, including hospital admissions.
Standing up for 30 minutes burns 50 extra calories an hour. Which many sound very little but for over 23 working days it converts in to burning extra 1150 calories in a month and over 13800 calories in a year! Not to mention over half a million extra calories burn over a 35 year career!
There is a reason why people are getting more and more sedentary and the reason is that there are fewer manual jobs these days. The healthiest job today is the postman job. Since the invention of computers and cell phone people are getting more and more sedentary and this is why we are finding more and more people with mental and physical health problems.
100 years ago there were very few patients in care homes despite the population of the time. Technology is a great tool but we should also be aware of our health and maintain our bodies for a healthier long life.
